Gramercy Park - Nature Within the Big City

Gramercy Park - Nature Within the Big City
By Kristy J Gomez

I've never been to New York. I'd LOVE to go, of course. How can one not want to visit the Big Apple? I mean, the stuff that comes to my mind when I hear "New York" are:
- Frank Sinatra
- Simon and Garfunkel
- David Letterman
- MoMA
- Times Square
- The Strokes
- Madison Square Garden
- The Knicks
- The Statue of Liberty
- Spider-Man
- Gramercy Park
And many more. New York is undoubtedly a melting pot of culture and international cool. Of all the world cities to go to, this would be my priority.
But of the things that come to mind when I think of New York, Gramercy Park intrigues me the most. You'd think the pop culture and art scene would captivate me more. They do captivate me but there's something very different about Gramercy Park. Something quiet, calming, and reassuring.
I guess it's the idea that while New York is "the city that never sleeps" there are pockets of calm scattered throughout the metropolis. I love the fast-paced life and somehow thrive on energy and noise. But I also value my downtime. For a city to have space for me to reconnect with nature is a big deal. So yes, Gramercy Park is one of those precious "creative enablers" in that you can just go there, relax, and iron out the kinks.
I'm aware that not everyone has access to Gramercy Park. It is private and only residents in the surrounding area have keys to enter. But that's OK, it's not like I'm actually going to visit the park (although if I had the money I'd definitely buy a house in the neighborhood!).
No, it's the idea of this protected spot within the city that intrigues me.
Gramercy Park represents an effort to keep nature accessible within the big city. It's a landmark that's cherished because of its history and appealing nature to the residents.
I think it's a good thing places like these are preserved and protected. We all need our green havens, private or not. Many of us maintain stressful jobs and lead hectic lives. Parks like the Gramercy are a much welcome place to slow down and ease up.
Especially if you're in the creative industry (which many people in New York are). You need to be able to go from the uber-modern world to the chilled out natural world in a matter of minutes. I find it helps the thinking process considerably. It also is comforting to know that when your brain is fried or you're on the verge of burn out, there is a place you can steal to for some much-needed air and calm.
What about you? What's your idea of calm? Do you favor high life in an urban zone, tempered by green parks and smoothing natural surroundings?
Or are you not bothered by city sprawls and industrialized spaces? Does a lack of greenery in the middle of a city bother you? Do you think that gated parks are an overrated privilege?
