Six Men's Suit Mistakes to Avoid

Author: Magnus

When you walk into a room, all eyes turn to you. You are perceived as intelligent, authoritative, and professional by everyone who sees you. All the ladies want your ear, and all the men want to be you.
Such is the power of men's suits.
That is, when you wear them correctly. The right suit can make you or break you. It can help you obtain the employment you want, look fashionable for the girl of your dreams, and boost your self confidence. Obtaining all of these benefits isn't easy for everyone, though. Many men just don't know how to wear their suits correctly.
Mistakes to Avoid With Men's Suits
There are several mistakes men often make when wearing men's suits. Often, problems arise not because men are not smart enough to pull off the look, but because they don't know any better. If this sounds like you, consider the following.
  • Suit Sleeves Are Too Long- One of the most aggravating concepts for you to understand might be how long your suit sleeves should be. Many fashion gurus will provide a wide range of advice on the subject, most likely leaving you confused. The answer to your question is simple and short, however: your suit sleeves should always end at your wrist bone when your arms are resting at your sides.
  • Too Much Shirt/Too Little Shirt- Once you have established the correct length for your suit sleeves, the next step is to take a look at how you are wearing your dress shirt. When you are wearing a single cuffed dress shirt, your shirt sleeve should extend past your suit sleeve 1.3 cm when your arms are at rest by your side. When wearing a double cuffed shirt, your shirt sleeves can extend a little longer past your suit sleeves, showing approximately 2 cm.
  • Fastening The Wrong Buttons- You may not know it yet, but you might be fastening the wrong buttons on your suit. On a two button suit, only fasten the top button. For three button suits, the middle button, or if you are more confident, the top and middle buttons should be the only buttons you fasten. Fastening the bottom buttons on a suit will distort the drape of the fabric and should never be done. Also, don't forget to unfasten all of the buttons when you sit down.
  • Tucking in Your Tie- If you are thinking of tucking in your tie, don't. This look is not fashionable in the slightest and is usually the result of a tie that is too long or trousers that are worn too high. Your tie should just reach your waistband or belt buckle; it should never be longer or shorter. If you are worried your tie might get in the way when you are leaning over, wear a tie clip; don't tuck it in.
  • Labels- When you purchase a suit, the designer's label will most likely be stitched somewhere on the jacket. Many times, it is placed on the sleeve. This is not meant to stay on the jacket and should be removed after purchasing the suit.
  • Looking Uncomfortable- When you put on a suit, you need to consider the fit, the colours, the style, and the patterns for the suit. Each one of these factors goes into making a suit look fantastic. If you don't make sure all of these factors are considered, you may end up looking uncomfortable, sloppy, and awkward in the suit. I may appear as if the suit is wearing you instead.
Wearing men's suits can help you obtain the respect you deserve, the job you want, and the admiration you desire. However, if you want to pull off the perfect look, avoid these common mistakes.
