There's no better way to celebrate the arrival of spring and summer than going on a picnic in a park or the wilderness with a bunch of friends, family or just your other half. Picnics have become a very trendy way to spend time, and homeware brands have been churning out accessories like baskets, blankets and dishes for years now, each trying to come up with something more stylish than their competitors.
As it's such a competitive field, fashion companies have followed suit and also branched out into picnic gear, particularly blankets. With picnic accessories as stylish as they are, it's equally important to wear something stylish to suit the occasion. You have to remember though, that picnics are an outdoor affair, therefore you really need to strike the balance between fashionable and practical. Here then are a few tips to ensure you look and feel good, but are also protected against the elements and safe from silly incidents like your skirt being too short to sit down in or your jeans being too tight to be able to sit comfortably.
Tops
The best type of fabric to choose is one with a bit of stretch. Many high street retailers offer a whole array of jersey tops in bright colours or bold patterns, both of which are bang on trend for spring/summer 2012. Be sure to layer up as the weather tends to be unpredictable, particularly in hilly areas or near the sea that are popular picnic settings. Wear a light T-shirt under a cardigan or jumper that you can take off if it gets too warm.
Bottoms
Trousers or leggings are the best option unless you're driving straight to your picnic spot and don't plan to roam around the area or play outdoor games. Chinos are a great, modern style that are made of a comfortable material perfect for hiking and sitting down on the ground. Leggings are also an excellent choice as the stretchy material is made for a comfortable fit. Avoid jeans as these are often too tight and can rub up against the skin if walking or sitting down for too long.
Accessories
Accessories are most certainly both fashionable and practical. Scarves are a great way to jazz up an otherwise bland but outdoorsy outfit. Choose a floral patterned one or a block coloured one and tie it in a trendy bow shape or loose knot. Top the fab look off with a sun hat with a wide brim in colourful straw. As long as it's no too heavy and doesn't cause a burden while you're walking to your picnic spot, jewellery is fine too. Sunglasses are chic as well. Choose vintage or vintage-inspired pieces.
Outerwear
Although the most practical choice is certainly a synthetic wind and rain proof jacket, it's not the most aesthetic. Check the weather report before setting off... It might be possible to get away with a light anorak or trench coat. Another alternative is leather jackets that provide warmth and protection from minor showers, yet also let your skin breathe.
