Prepare For Beautiful Summer Skin
By Jennifer Hughs
We are heading into summer and will soon be wanting to bare beautiful, toned and gleaming skin in flirty dresses and sexy monokinis. Now is the time to pamper your skin and reverse some of the winter neglect so that your skin will be glowing in time for the summer sun.
The first step to getting summer ready skin is to exfoliate your body. Skin gets dry and dry cells accumulate during the winter months when you are all covered up. This makes skin dull and even dollops of lotion will not make it look fresh. Use a body scrub in the shower and gently rub it onto the skin in a circular motion with a sponge. Exfoliate from the shoulders to the feet and consider using a facial exfoliator for the delicate skin, neck and dcollet area. If you want beautiful skin all year round, grab that exfoliator and use it daily.
If you have been lax about shaving during winter, now is the time to crack out a new razor and get shaving. Use a shaving lotion for a close shave and be sure to apply moisturizer after shaving to prevent itching. If you are in a pinch, your hair conditioner can be used instead of shaving cream.
Get into the summer vibe early by using a scented body lotion. Winter is all about heavy body butters but light lotions are better for summer. Choose one that can be easily absorbed - gels and purees are great options. Coconut and mango are perfect summer scents. Apply the lotion after getting out of the shower and you will be surrounded by the smell of summer all day as the lotion seals the moisture directly into the skin.
Summer skin should be glowing but instead of lounging like a lizard in the sun, use a self tan. A sunless tanner is a good start to getting that glow and there are facial options that can be used on alternative days instead of moisturizer to get a soft tan on the face. Most facial tanners create a gradual tanning effect.
Feet are often neglected but perfect tootsies are an essential part of any summer makeover, especially when they are being displayed in strappy sandals. Treat yourself to a pedicure at a spa or do one at home. Scrub off the dry skin using a pumice stone and a tube of foot scrub in the shower a few times a week to get your feet soft and ready for summer.
Replace your sunscreen. All skincare products have a shelf life and it is better to replace the one from last year with a new one, preferably in a higher SPF. Use a shot glass amount of your body and a teaspoon sized amount on your face every day. If you have been in the sun for two hours, reapply. Sunscreen is essential in avoiding age spots and wrinkles, as well as skin cancer. Choose a product that has both UVA and UVB protection. Remember to apply a balm with sunscreen to the lips as well.
Avoid clogged pores and pimples by switching to a lighter moisturizer. The humidity in summer does no favors for the skin and the heavy formulations slathered on in winter will weigh down the skin. Swap your foundation for a mineral based powder option and use bronzing powder instead of cream based blush. Water proof mascara is a must for when you are frolicking in the pool and a lashing of tinted gloss completes any summer look.
Follow these simple and pampering steps and you will be boasting glorious summer skin in time for that rendezvous on the beach!
